Fly-in safaris involve traveling predominantly by aircraft to remote destinations located in the prime wilderness areas of southern Africa. Apart from the fact that flying is the only viable means of transport to remote areas, aerial viewing also allows for a wider perspective and greater understanding of the remote and rugged areas visited. It would not be possible, for example, to fully appreciate the complexity of the Okavango Delta's channel systems and vast numbers of islands without an aerial view. Much the same can be said for other wilderness regions in southern Africa, such as the Namib Desert.

The Cessna 206 'Stationair' is the workhorse of the Okavango Delta, flying hundreds of passengers and many tons of luggage and provisions between camps every week. This 5-passenger single-engined aircraft is equipped with a rather small, shallow luggage pod between the front wheels - hence the requirement for a minimum of luggage packed in a soft duffel bag. In the foreground - Diana Kruger of Wilderness Safaris. The pilots, many of whom are expert guides in their own right, will add to the wilderness experience. In the Okavango, where much of our flying is done, we usually use either a Cessna 206 (five passenger seater) or the Norman Brittany Islander (eight to ten passenger seater) for flights of fairly short duration. Very few of the flights linking one point to the next are over an hour. For safety reasons, luggage is restricted to 12 kg (25 lb.) per person. Scheduled air departures using reputable airlines are utilized where longer distances have to be covered.
Our fly-in safaris, with daily or weekly departures, allow us to offer safaris that you can design to suit your own time frame and interests. Further, and more importantly, our fly-in safaris offer our clients the opportunity of covering a larger diversity of habitats than would be possible on a vehicle safari. Once you arrive at your destination, your game and other nature-oriented activities begin in open 4-wheel drive vehicles, boats, canoes, mokoros or on foot.
