BOTSWANA & SOUTH AFRICA: SEPT. 1999

illustrate our Sept. 1999 Jacana Safari in Botswana.

While we were observing several lions drinking at the waterhole at Savuti Tented Camp, one lioness was seen making herself at home in front of one of the accommodation units. The guests were out on a game-drive.	Savuti Tented Camp is well-known for the lions which frequent its waterhole. In the dry season this waterhole attracts a great variety of wildlife, as there is little or no other water in the area for many months of the year.
At the same time that we were observing the lions, a small group of elephants were also drinking at the waterhole at Savuti Tented Camp.	On the way back to Linyanti Tented Camp, we experienced some interaction between this elephant bull and two lions, who were 'guarding' a dead hippo. The elephant walked straight towards the lions, who scattered.
Our tent at Baobab Tented Camp in the south-western part of the Okavango Delta.	At Baobab, we went on several long walks with our guide Russell Crossey, leading the way. Russell had previously been a senior trails ranger in South Africa, so we felt quite confident walking under his watchful eyes.
