Tanzania Trip Report Part 1 (Highlights)

Tanzania Trip Report Part 2 (Accommodations)

For Tanzania, we offer a variety of overland and fly-in trips operated by Origins Safaris as well as TPS (Tanzania Photographic Safaris).

Compared with the usual 'run of the mill' Tanzania itineraries, I believe the TPS trips are more imaginative, and offer more walking (the perfect 'antidote' for the long game-drives in the Serengeti). TPS' Safari Style trip includes Lake Victoria and the Western Kilimanjaro area, from where visitors can enjoy the classic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, an absolutely 'must' when visiting Tanzania.

TPS' Safari Style departure has an ideal mix of accommodation: one night in a hotel in Arusha, 4 nights in permanent tented camps, 4 nights in lodges and 2 nights in a mobile tented camp. All accommodation is 'en suite' so there is no 'roughing it' or participation camping. This safari is operated twice monthly throughout the year, except in April and May. There are also monthly departures on the superb 'Adventure Tanzania' safari, which includes the fabulous Kirawira Camp and Rubondo Island Camp on Lake Victoria (details on request). For a longer stay in East Africa, we would recommend adding a few days in either Selous and/or Ruaha, or perhaps an area such as Kenya's Lewa Downs, in the 'dry north' where both black and white rhino may be see, as well as some very special endemic mammals such as Grevy's Zebra and Reticulated Giraffe.

In our opinion, the best choice for a moderately priced overland trip is the 12-day 'Journey into Tanzania'.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: On your arrival you will be met by a TPS representative who will escort you to the New Arusha Hotel for a comfortable afternoon and evening prior to your departure the following morning.

Day 2: Your first experience of safari life will be the thrilling drive through the vastness of Tarangire National Park. Travelling through the park you will marvel at the beauty of this pristine wilderness before arriving at our own Kikoti Camp. Built on a ridge overlooking the park, Kikoti is a superb location from which to explore Tarangire. The welcoming gala dinner and traditional dances are unforgettable experiences and of course our comfortable thatched tents will ensure that you awake refreshed and eager for more the next day.

Day 3: Leaving camp early in the morning with a packed breakfast means that you can make the most of prime game viewing opportunities before heading back to camp for a late lunch. Escorted by armed guards and naturalist, a game walk in the late afternoon will give you an intimate taste of life as an African explorer before you take a refreshing sundowner on Kikoti Rock with some of the best sunsets in Africa as a backdrop. An evening game drive in a convertible vehicle will open up for you the world of Africa’s nocturnal game before you enjoy your bush dinner and retire at the end of an exhilarating day.

Days 4, 5: We take you to our mobile camp on the shores of Lake Eyasi. Travelling via towns such as Mto wa Mbu and Karatu we will have the chance to wander amongst the Barabaiz and Datoga tribes people before reaching the lakeshore. As there are no permanent accommodations on the lake we outfit a full mobile canvas camp for your use here. These spacious tents with en suite facilities, allow you to live much as the first explorers did without making any concessions to modern comfort levels. With such comforts guaranteed, you are perfectly placed to share the lives of the Hadzabe bushmen escorted by Momayo Muhindoi. Experiencing life through the eyes of such ancient peoples will give you a privileged view of the lives of one of the last groups of authentic hunter gather groups left in Africa.

Day 6, 7: Bidding farewell to our cultural hosts we will drive up to the Ngorongoro highlands taking an early lunch at the Ngorogoro Wildlife Lodge that will be your home for the next two evenings, we will have plenty of time in the afternoon to explore this magnificent habitat. The crater walls drop sheer for almost 2000ft before depositing you in the middle of the greatest wildlife concentration in Africa. In addition to these superb wildlife viewing opportunities we will also take you to visit the Olmoti Crater, high above the park floor, from which the Mungi river flows in a magnificent picture perfect waterfall on its way to the crater floor below.

Day 8, 9, 10, 11: We shall spend in the Serengeti, once again staying in our mobile camp. On the way we shall stop to visit Olduvai Gorge, a river canyon cutting 300ft into the volcanic Serengeti plains, once home to our earliest ancestors. Their remains can still be found nestling in the exposed soils. Part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, Serengeti National Park is home to the most famous wildlife spectacle on earth, the annual migration of a million wildebeest. We use the Seronera Plains for our camping in order to ensure year round access to this mobile feast.

Day 12: You may either return to Arusha by road, a trip of approximately 7 hours, or take the option of a scheduled flight back from Seronera airstrip – the choice is yours.
